Haiti Trip #1 — Arrival Home
Saturday, February 19, 2005 arrived far too quickly, but I was so excited to go home that I jumped out of bed and was ready to go within 10 minutes! Once we checked in and arrived at our gate, I called home. It was 4 a.m. our time, but I didn’t care. I just had to hear my husband’s voice and tell him some of what I had experienced. We were only able to talk for about 15 minutes, but it was enough to get me through the rest of the day.
The flight from Miami to Seattle was MUCH more pleasant. The gentleman next to me had the aisle seat and I the window seat. Nobody between us. I rented a digeplayer (a portable pre-programmed video/music system), and enjoyed two documentaries on the history of Alaska Airlines and one on the sights and attractions of Alaska. They were well-done and I found them fascinating. I then listened to some music and watched a movie. It was a wonderful distraction from the events of the day before.
As we began our descent over Washington, we saw the Columbia River, Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Mt. Saint Helens, and flew so closely to Mt. Rainier that it was as if we could reach out and touch it. The gentleman sharing my row moved over to see out the window and we talked about all the various outdoor activities in Washington and Oregon. He shared some of the trips he and his family have taken that sounds very interesting. I will definitely look into them.
After a brief layover in Seattle, I was finally on my final flight home. We flew along the I-5 corridor and it was so interesting to see the I-5/I-205 interchange from the air. We not only arrived early, but I told my husband the wrong time. Oops! So I took my time getting off the plane. As I walked toward baggage claim, a woman asked if I knew where she was to go for her connecting flight. There was some ambiguity to the airport signs, but I knew where she was to go so I just told her that I would escort her to her gate. After doing so, I went to baggage claim, found my bag, and went up to the upper deck.
I was dressed for Haiti and Florida weather so I was a bit cold up there. Just as I considering going back into the building, I saw our van come around the corner. My husban was early! I began to cry and was so very happy to see my family. Danielle was asleep but I hugged and kissed everyone else. I was so happy to be home and yet wanting to be back in Haiti. Once Danielle woke up, she let me know that she was not at all pleased with my absence. She has clung to my husband and avoided me. However, as I wrote that sentence, Danielle squealed with delight and ran over to give me a hug! I believe that I have been officially forgiven.
